A prebuy inspection is a negotiated evaluation for a proposed transaction—not a guarantee and not automatically the same as a regulatory inspection. The scope should reflect the aircraft's configuration, history, location, and intended use.
Choose the inspector carefully
Ask about experience with ICON A5 aircraft, composite structures, Rotax 912 iS systems, amphibious operations, the applicable maintenance framework, and the ability to review records before the physical inspection. Independence from the seller and repair facility should be discussed.
Records review
- Registration, serial number, data plate, and ownership documents
- Airframe, engine, propeller, and equipment log continuity
- Inspection status, maintenance entries, repairs, and alterations
- Applicable airworthiness directives, safety notices, service information, and operating limitations
- Weight and balance, equipment list, manuals, and supplements
- Damage, incident, water exposure, storage, and corrosion-prevention history
Physical inspection themes
The exact work belongs to the qualified inspector. Discuss composite condition, controls, landing gear, hull and water-contact areas, seals and drainage, engine and propeller installation, fluids, electrical and avionics systems, parachute-system status, folding-wing mechanisms, trailer condition, and evidence of improper storage or repair.
Operational evaluation
If a demonstration or test flight is appropriate, define who will act as pilot in command, insurance coverage, weather and water limits, objectives, and discrepancy handling. A buyer should not be pressured into operating beyond qualifications or comfort.
Turn findings into a decision
Classify discrepancies by airworthiness, safety, records, near-term maintenance, cosmetic condition, and future value. Agree in writing whether findings result in correction, credit, escrow holdback, price renegotiation, or termination.
